I studied Business and Law at UCD and started my training contract in April 2015 shortly after the initial hurdle of the FE-1s! I am currently in the first rotation of my training contract working in the Corporate Department and I will begin PPC1 at Blackhall Place in September.
A typical day as a Trainee in the Corporate Department might involve attending meetings with clients, drafting various legal documents for transactions, reviewing contracts for due diligence, researching niche areas of company law or helping to organise client AGMs. We are given great exposure to the work in the department and we work closely with the Associates and Partners.
There is very much an open-door policy in William Fry and asking for feedback is encouraged.
Trainees are paired up with mentors, usually an Associate, who guide us and help us to improve on our work. There are also mid-seat reviews with the Partners to discuss how you are getting on, the experience you are getting and whether there is any room for improvement.
The Training Department also go to great lengths to welcome new Trainees into the firm. They offer frequent training sessions on legal developments and firm software to equip us with the skills we need to work effectively in our departments. The software and facilities in the firm are cutting edge and the searchable database of precedents is particularly helpful for Trainees.
There is also a great social side to life in William Fry and there are plenty of opportunities to get to know your colleagues outside of the office. There is a great sense of camaraderie in the firm and it is very easy to settle in. In my brief time with the firm there has been a steady flow of social events from the summer barbeque, tag rugby and Trainee nights out to department drinks, days at the races, golf outings and tennis tournaments. I played in the William Fry tennis tournament in May which was brilliant fun although little did I know some of my opponents would be national standard!
The experience I have gained in my short time with the Firm has been invaluable. The work is exciting and fast-paced and I have been given the opportunity to work on high profile transactions with incredibly bright and experienced solicitors who pave the way in their areas of expertise.
"I have gained invaluable experience and have been given the opportunity to work on some of Ireland's biggest recent corporate transactions."
