Fergus is a Partner in William Fry's ProjectsConstruction Department and Head of our Energy & Natural Resources Group.  Fergus advises local and international power, oil, gas and commodities companies on major projects, transactions and regulatory matters.  He has particular expertise in advising new market participants, and those considering opportunities, in the energy sector in Ireland, including in relation to renewable energy and co-generation.  Fergus also advises procuring authorities, bidders, financiers, contractors and operators in relation to PPPs in highly regulated sectors.  Prior to joining William Fry, Fergus spent four years working as a projects and transactional lawyer in California, where notably he advised on wind and geothermal power generation and a major zinc refinery project.

Recent significant work includes advising ESB, Glanpower, Atlantic Petroleum, Gazprom, E.ON, Flogas, ConocoPhillips and Pratt & Whitney.  In addition Fergus has recently advised:

  • ESB on the acquisition of Northern Ireland Electricity plc (NIE), the Northern Ireland electricity transmission and distribution business of the Viridian Group
  • Aughinish Alumina Limited in relation to the gas, HFO and bauxite supply arrangements for its CHP plant and alumina refinery and related financial and physical sales contracts
  • RWE in its participation in the Irish energy market
  • UPMC in relation to its participation, as owner operator, in the development of three Co-Located Hospital PPP projects.
