A new cap on roaming charges will come into force on 1 July 2012. The EU has been capping the price of calling and texting in the EU since 2007, but, for the first time, price caps are being extended to cover data downloads. A cap of 70 cents per Megabyte (plus VAT) will apply from 1 July 2012. The caps in respect of calls and SMS will also be reduced from 1 July 2012.
The European Commission estimates that a typical business person travelling in the EU will save over €1,000 per year as a result of the new price caps on data downloads.
The European Commission has also announced that from 2014, there will be full competition in the roaming market as customers will be able to choose a network for roaming services in the same way that they choose wifi networks.
