Privatisation Interest

September 8, 2011

Private investors from the UK, the Middle East and China are reported to have approached the Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, about possible investment in Ireland’s transport infrastructure.

Investment fund managers from China and UK investment banks are reported to be interested in a possible investment. The Minister has indicated that none of the approaches have yet been “concrete”. A possible sale of Dublin port or part of the Dublin Airport Authority’s Terminal Two have been mooted as a capital raising measure.

In April, the Government published the Report of the Review Group on State Assets and Liabilities on prospective Irish State asset disposals and reorganisation in the public sector aimed at reducing the national debt. It is also reported that the National Lottery may feature among a possible sale of state assets.
