The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020 – exit day – and EU-UK trade relations are now governed by the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) and the Withdrawal Agreement. The TCA deals with trade in goods; trade in services (to a lesser extent); level playing field; and governance, among other subjects. The Withdrawal Agreement contains the Northern Ireland Protocol and also deals with citizens’ rights. The Northern Ireland Protocol requires that goods undergo checks when they enter Northern Ireland from Great Britain. There has been considerable friction between the EU and the UK over the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol.
