The UK’s Information Commissioner (ICO), Elizabeth Denham, and the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, Daniel Therrien, jointly announced the launch of the Common Thread Network’s new website with the aim of advancing cross-border cooperation between Commonwealth countries in respect of individual privacy and data protection rights.
The Common Thread Network is a network of data protection and privacy regulators across the Commonwealth nations. It was established in October 2014 in order to “leverage the strengths available within the Commonwealth to support each other.” There are twenty member nations including the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The UK’s ICO expects the Common Thread Network to grow stating in a press release that, “the new website is one among many features which the Common Thread Network intends to use to foster a common approach and create synergies among Commonwealth nations to uphold individuals’ privacy and data protection rights.”
