In Short: Equality Tribunal Awards €81,000 to Employee for Discrimination on the Grounds of Gender and Disability

An NUIG employee has been awarded €81,000 for discrimination on the grounds of gender and disability. She had been engaged on a series of rolling teaching contracts from 1994, but when she was offered a permanent contract in 2005, the contract was stated to be for a non-academic role and the title of lecturer had been dropped. The Equality Tribunal viewed a series of incidents, including interactions over the course of two periods of maternity leave and a period of leave following a broken leg, as a “continuum of discrimination” and accepted that the claimant had established that she was treated less favourably because of her pregnancy and maternity leave.
