Given the economic landscape, local authorities have experienced a decline in revenues from their development contribution schemes resulting from the non-payment of development contributions. Recent actions taken by Wicklow County Council reveal a new strategy for dealing with these unpaid development contributions.
A developer of a housing estate in Wicklow did not discharge the development contributions and now Wicklow County Council has demanded a proportion of the unpaid development contributions from homeowners in that estate. This highlights the importance of ensuring that all development contributions are paid, prior to completing an acquisition of a property, regardless of whether they were levied on the original developer.
