William Fry Data Protection Update - January 2015

January 28, 2015

To mark Data Protection Day 2015, our Technology team review some of the key data protection stories of 2014 and look ahead to developments in 2015. Now in its ninth year, Data Protection Day is celebrated globally every 28 January to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices.
2014 was an active year for data protection and privacy with proposals for increased regulation not only in Europe but also in other jurisdictions such as the US. At national and European level we have seen some interesting court decisions which have kept data protection issues in the public spotlight.

Some significant changes have taken place with the appointment of a new Minister for Data Protection, Dara Murphy T.D. and the substantial increases to the funding of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, which represent a firm commitment by the Irish Government to promote and support a national data protection framework.

We saw the departure of Billy Hawkes as Data Protection Commissioner and the appointment of a new Commissioner, Helen Dixon.

In this issue, we summarise some of the key developments of 2014, together with a look at some of the areas set to be topical in 2015.

Data protection will undoubtedly continue to be a busy area in 2015. You can check our website and follow us on Twitter @WFIDEA to keep up to date on all the latest in data protection news.
