William Fry advises AVK on Europe's First Data Centre Microgrid

AVK, Europe’s leading provider of prime, standby and dispatchable power solutions for data centres and AI infrastructure, together with Pure Data Centres Group (Pure DC), the hyperscale cloud and AI data centre developer and operator, have announced the launch of Europe’s first, large-scale 110 MW on-site microgrid to support a self-generated data centre that relies on its own power generation and fuel.

The microgrid was developed by AVK, is currently fuelled by natural gas but it is capable of using more sustainable fuel sources such as biomethane and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). Designed to support phased data centre delivery without burdening Ireland’s national grid, the 110MW microgrid solution will also help accelerate cloud and AI deployments.

The William Fry team advising AVK was led by Jarleth Heneghan (Partner, Projects & Construction) including Cassandra Byrne (Consultant, Projects & Construction) Máire O’Neill (Partner, Corporate and Co-Head, Energy & Infrastructure) and Claire Waterson (Partner, Regulatory).

“We are delighted to have been involved in supporting AVK on Irish law aspects for Europe’s first data centre microgrid.  This has been a very exciting and interesting project to work on, providing an entirely off-grid solution for accelerating data centre development and AI deployment ,whilst supporting longterm grid connection and renewable energy, enabling storage and trialling low-carbon innovative generation technology.”
