John is a Partner in William Fry's Technology Department. John has extensive experience in both commercial and technology law including licensing, outsourcing, e-commerce, data protection and privacy, cybersecurity, cloud computing and intellectual property. John is involved in an advisory capacity on a number of accelerator programs and has a particularly strong reputation in the data protection and cybersecurity fields. He is also a Registered Irish and Community Trade Mark and Design Attorney.

John’s expertise ranges from advising on ICT procurement projects and outsourcing to mobile applications as well as data protection and cybersecurity issues such as providing guidance on direct marketing campaigns, international data transfers, security breaches, privacy impact assessments and audits as well as assisting organisations with the game-changing General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which came into force in May 2018. 

John also advises tech start-ups, food, beverage and agribusinesses as well as sports tech businesses. John is a member of the firm’s FDI Group and Asia Practice Group and is also a committee member of the Ireland India Business Association and Chairman of its ICT Working Group. 

Recent work includes advising:

  • A leading online retailer on data protection issues relating to direct marketing as well as fraud prevention, branding and e-commerce, website cookies compliance, cybersecurity and data retention.
  • A security printing company on all commercial contracts and back-to-back subcontracts necessary to develop and rollout a number of projects for public identity cards.
  • A leading multinational retailer in respect of a wide range of data protection, IT contracts, website matters, telecoms procurement matters and commercial contracts.
  • Leading global funds and financial services providers on data protection and privacy issues in relation to outsourcing, cybersecurity, adoption of new technologies and international data transfer solutions.
